SUMMARY:Summer Adult Read: The Book of Strange New Things
DESCRIPTION:A monumental\, genre-defying novel that David Mitchell calls “Michel Faber’s second masterpiece\,” The Book of Strange New Things is a masterwork from a writer in full command of his many talents. \nIt begins with Peter\, a devoted man of faith\, as he is called to the mission of a lifetime\, one that takes him galaxies away from his wife\, Bea. Peter becomes immersed in the mysteries of an astonishing new environment\, overseen by an enigmatic corporation known only as USIC.   His work introduces him to a seemingly friendly native population struggling with a dangerous illness and hungry for Peter’s teachings—his Bible is their “book of strange new things.” But Peter is rattled when Bea’s letters from home become increasingly desperate: typhoons and earthquakes are devastating whole countries\, and governments are crumbling.  Suddenly\, a separation measured by an otherworldly distance\, and defined both by one newly discovered world and another in a state of collapse\, is threatened by an ever-widening gulf that is much less quantifiable.  While Peter is reconciling the needs of his congregation with the desires of his strange employer\, Bea is struggling for survival.  Their trials lay bare a profound meditation on faith\, love tested beyond endurance\, and our responsibility to those closest to us. \nBook available at the front desk and discussion on Thursday\, August 22 at 7 pm. \n  \nAt every Adult Summer Reading Program participants will receive a raffle ticket for a $10 Trader Joe’s gift card (drawing after each program).

SUMMARY:Before Sunset
DESCRIPTION:In Honor of Notre Dame Cathedral: \nBefore Sunset’ is an American romantic drama that was released in 2004 to much acclaim from film critics and staring Ethan Hawke as young American author Jesse and French-American actress Julie Delpy as his lover Céline. The film received major critical acclaim and was even nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. \nIn a scene that went viral over social media when the Notre Dame Cathedral was on fire\, Jesse (Hawke) looks at the structure and tells Céline (Delpy) about a legend which speaks of the beauty of the cathedral while they are on a boat on River Seine. \nJesse says in the film: “I heard this story once\, about when the Germans were occupying Paris and they had to retreat back\, they wire Notre Dame to blow. But they had to leave one guy in charge of hitting the switch and the guy\, the soldier\, he couldn’t do it. You know\, he just sat there\, knocked out by how beautiful the place was. And then\, when the Allied troops came in\, they found all the explosives just lying there… ” \nFilms are shown Friday Afternoon at 1 PM in our upstairs theater for adults 18 & up.\nHot Tea\, Pastries & Popcorn served and discussion after all movies. \nOur last film before our break for the summer is: APOLLO 11
