SUMMARY:Friday Film Club: The Big Short
DESCRIPTION:Our Friday Film Club in October explores: When is a house a home?  \nWe start house hunting on October 6th with The Big Short\, where bigger is not always better and more often leaves many with less…much less money that is.  If you’re lucky enough to own a vacation home\, there might be reason to worry in Buster’s Mal Heart on October 13th. Then there are those that love their house so much\, they just can’t leave\, as in Wakefield on October 20th\, and A Ghost Story on October 27th. \nThe Big Short: In 2008\, Wall Street guru Michael Burry realizes that a number of subprime home loans are in danger of defaulting. Burry bets against the housing market by throwing more than $1 billion of his investors’ money into credit default swaps. His actions attract the attention of banker Jared Vennett (Ryan Gosling)\, hedge-fund specialist Mark Baum (Steve Carell) and other greedy opportunists. Together\, these men make a fortune by taking full advantage of the impending economic collapse in America. \nFall Films in October start at 1:00 PM in the library’s upstairs theater and is for adults 18 & up. Hot Tea\, Pastries & Popcorn served and discussion after all movies. \nClick here to view October Movie selections

SUMMARY:Friday Film Club: Buster's Mal Heart
DESCRIPTION:October 13: Buster’s Mal Heart \nIn this bold thriller peppered with dark humor and interlocking mystery\, an eccentric mountain man is on the run from the authorities\, surviving the winter by breaking into empty vacation homes in a remote community. Regularly calling into radio talk shows – where he has acquired the nickname “Buster”.  As the solitary present-day Buster drifts from house to house\, eluding the local sheriff at every turn\, we gradually piece together the events that fractured his life and left him alone on top of a snowy mountain\, or perhaps in a small rowboat in the middle of a vast ocean – or both\, in this visceral mind bender that will provoke discussion long after it turns your world upside-down. \nOur Friday Film Club in October explores: When is a house a home?  \nWe start house hunting on October 6th with The Big Short\, where bigger is not always better and more often leaves many with less…much less money that is.  If you’re lucky enough to own a vacation home\, there might be reason to worry in Buster’s Mal Heart on October 13th. SUMMARY:Friday Film Club: Wakefield
DESCRIPTION:Our Friday Film Club in October explores: When is a house a home?  \nIn Robin Swicord’s adaptation of E.L. Doctorow’s short story\, successful suburbanite commuter Howard Wakefield (Bryan Cranston) takes a perverse detour from family life: He vanishes without a trace. Hidden in the attic of his carriage house garage\, surviving by scavenging at night\, Howard secretly observes the lives of his wife (Jennifer Garner) and children and neighbors. WAKEFIELD becomes a fraught meditation on marriage and identity\, as Howard slowly realizes that he has not in fact left his family\, he has left himself. \n  \nFall Films in October start at 1:00 PM in the library’s upstairs theater for adults 18 & up.      Hot Tea\, Pastries & Popcorn served and discussion after all movies. \n  \nThere are those that love their house so much\, they just can’t leave\, as in Wakefield on October 20th\, and A Ghost Story on October 27th. \nClick here for more on Film Club

SUMMARY:Purple Pinky Day
DESCRIPTION:Purple Pinky Day with Dr. Eddie Coyle: Polio Survivor and Delco Hall of Famer\n \nThe Rotary Club of Media will have a special event on October 24\, 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the Media-Upper Providence Library Community room to celebrate World Polio Day.  The event is open to the public. \nThere is no cost for the event but those attending will be encouraged to make a donation to Rotary’s End Polio Now effort\, with all donations matched 2-1 by the Gates Foundation.  Those making a donation will dip their pinky in a safe purple dye\, a sign of solidarity with children around the world who get a “purple pinky” when they have been immunized.  There will be light refreshments. \nSince 1985\, Rotary International has led the effort to eradicate polio from the earth.  At that time\, there were about one thousand cases a day worldwide.  Last year\, there were only 8 cases of wild poliovirus report worldwide in only three countries.  During its thirty year effort Rotary Clubs across the globe have organized and participated in mass immunizations\, Rotarians have donated over $1 billion\, and they have lobbied and worked with their national leaders to support this effort. \n

SUMMARY:Friday Film Club: A Ghost Story
DESCRIPTION:Recently deceased\, a white-sheeted ghost (Academy Award-winner Casey Affleck) returns to his suburban home to console his bereft wife (Academy Award-nominee Rooney Mara)\, only to find that in his spectral state he has become unstuck in time\, forced to watch passively as the life he knew and the woman he loves slowly slip away. Increasingly unmoored\, the ghost embarks on a cosmic journey through memory and history\, confronting life’s ineffable questions and the enormity of existence. \nAn unforgettable meditation on love and grief\, A GHOST STORY emerges ecstatic and surreal – a wholly unique experience that lingers long after the credits roll.\n  \nFall Films in October start at 1:00 pm in the library’s upstairs theater and is for adults 18 & up. Hot Tea\, Pastries & Popcorn served and discussion after all movies. \nClick Friday Film Club for more details
