Unlacing the Victorian Lady
Saturday, June 9, 2012 @ 4:30 pm.
When a Victorian woman said she was going to dress for dinner, it may well have been her fourth change of clothes that day! And did you ever wonder what they wore under those fancy, cumbersome dresses? You can find out by attending Unlacing the Victorian Woman, presented by costume designer and historian Barbara Meyer Darlin.
This popular program has been described as a one-woman fashion show, a social history lesson, a conceptual-performance/lecture, and a Victorian striptease. As she changes – onstage – into the outfits worn by a turn-of-the-century lady in a typical day, she shows the audience two typical ensembles for day wear, complete with all the unmentionables. Audience volunteers help lace the corset and hook the garments.
Throughout the program, Ms. Darlin explains women’s role in Victorian society, daily routines, and social customs and etiquette.
Ms. Darlin earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Indiana University, and has more than 30 years experience in costuming for theater.
This program is free of charge. Registration is requested. 610-566-1918 or medirector@delcolibraries.org
